Why Pastors Should Get Political

"Can you imagine if (Abolitionist William) Wilberforce said, 'I don't want to teach about the slave trade. I don't want to be political. I might turn off someone who needs to hear the gospel'?" So challenged New York Tmes best-selling author Eric Metaxes at an event about a week ago at Moody Church.  Both he and Moody Senior Pastor Dr. Erwin Lutzer were comparing the church in Nazi Germany to the American Church today.

You see, just like the church in Nazi Germany refused to speak out against evil and injustice some 70 years ago, so the American Church is shirking its responsibility today.  How often have you heard a pastor justify his silence on issues of abortion, gay marriage or state infringement of religious freedom by saying he doesn’t want to get political?  What that pastor is really communicating is that he’s compartmentalizing his Christian faith.  He’s fine with preaching a gospel that offers souls forgiveness and eternity in heaven. But, he refuses to preach a gospel that confronts sexual perversion – or resists a government that requires Christians to violate their consciences.

“(W)hat kind of gospel do you want to lead them to?” Metaxes asked.  “Some kind of spineless, toothless gospel?’”

But increasingly, that is the American gospel.  We’re afraid of offending liberal Christians.  We’re afraid of offending seekers.  And, we’re really afraid of losing our tax-exempt status.  But, as Metaxes stated, “If every pastor were near the edge where he’s afraid he’ll have his 501c3 revoked . . . there’d be radical cultural change.”

The American church is losing battle after cultural battle.  But, instead of becoming more bold, we’re becoming more timid.  Just this week, I learned that the IRS is plowing ahead with plans to clamp down on conservative and religious non-profit groups.  Yet, will pastors urge their congregations to resist?  Will Christians bombard the administration with demands that the IRS cease its unlawful discrimination?  I doubt it.  But, as Pastor and Prophet Dietrich Bonhoeffer astutely observed, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”  For once, the church should learn from its history, not repeat it.

  1. Speaking of slavery, God once approved of and even indorsed slavery. Things change. Slavery is wrong; it's kinda a layup. We see constant shifting of societal changes showing up in the bible throughout. Like it’s no longer cool to stone adulterous women. And we see values change after the bible too: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet.” If you’re not in a bonnet, you probably believe woman sometimes have valid points. God sometimes creates people that possess both male and female genitally. God sometime creates people that have male and female brain parts too. Loving and accepting people of all races and sexuality is Christ like; judging then not so much

    1. Your sophistry offers a very thin justification for willful sin. Also, to co-opt slavery in an attempt to justify homosexuality is insulting.
I take it, by your argument, that God "creates" people with bigoted or compulsive or alcoholic brain parts as well, or does God only make people with brain parts that insist on attacking Biblical marriage?
It is obvious that you are just following the current progressive narrative. Please learn to think for yourself, and spend more time in your Bible and less time on Reddit.

    2. It figures: 'Anonymous'. You violate the of Law of God with impunity and dare to denounce a Creator whom you have absolutely NO IDEA about.

The Bible never says that slavery is a sin. That said, the slavery practiced by the Hebrews is not the same as the slavery practiced by Egypt, or even by the American South. Chattel slavery, where the individual is OWNED is different from Biblical slavery. The word OWNER is never used concerning slaves, it is always 'master'. Frankly 'Anonymous' has no clue that he/she is a slave him/herself...TO SIN.

Did Jesus say: I came to abolish the Law? No. He said the exact OPPOSITE. "“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."(Mt 5:17)

Paul spoke wisely cocnerning women and authority over men. Just because YOU can't handle it, doesn't make it any less wise.

Since all creation CEASED on the sixth day, tell me where God created anyone with both male and female sex organs? No, transgenders do on occasion occur, but not because they were created so. Jesus addressed this when He spoke concerning EUNUCHS, of which He stated that there were 3 types. Those which occur in the womb and then come forth was the first mentioned. This is a manifestation of a type of miscarriage, and has to do with the presence of sin in the world (not that the individual produced is evil, but that sin in the world on occasion causes such things to occur). The eunuch is not sinful BECAUSE of the condition in which he/she was born. Then there is the eunuch who became a eunuch due to war or some sort of accident of men. Finally, there is the self-imposed eunuch who dedicates him or herself to the service of God and foregoes marriage. None of the three conditions are described as being sinful.

Finally, your totally wicked statement "Loving and accepting people of all races and sexuality is Christ like; judging then not so much" belies all Biblical sense. If God wanted us to accept homosexuality, He would not have specified the death penalty for its adherents, nor would He have called it 'towebah' or abomination. Homosexuality and eunuchs are not the same. Homosexuality is filthy and deserves eradication, which God Himself will attend to on the Last Day. All unrepentant homosexuals will be cast into Ge'enna, the Lake of Fire. along with all other unrepentant sinners. So then 'Anonymous', where will YOU stand on the Last Day when you are called before the One with whom we have to give an account to? Think long and hard about that. And when you come to the conclusion that you will be cast into that fiery abyss because of your sins, go to God and ask His forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ, and He will abundantly pardon you. But if you reject God's provision for salvation, you WILL die, for as it is written, 'the soul that sins, IT WILL DIE.'

  2. I attended this extremely important event and have not stopped thinking about it since. Christians are not paying attention, and are being entertained to death. I enjoyed your post here, too.

I also really appreciated your responses to Colin Lambert this morning (3/25 Tue) regarding World Vision’s new view on homosexuality as it relates to their company. Your response to Colin and that situation is becoming laughable to the world, unfortunately. I am grateful to God for your defense of truth. I used to count on Moody for an absolute stance on Biblical truth, but am finding the morning show especially is moving off that stance, unfortunately, though this slide is in step with the rest of the world.

My blessing to you and your ministry efforts to make God known.

  3. caught my attention this morning when you stepped up!Listening to christian radio stations these days can at times give a new meaning to the phrase"EAT THE MEAT ,THROW AWAY THE BONES ! this morning (3/26/2014)as i was driving going to drop my son off,we were listening to christian radio as we usally do,and as the controversial topic of abortion was discussed, one of the Moody radio morning show host, broadcasted his view concerning the showing of the pictures,I wondered as to how I always perceive this particular morning show host to be putting the balances, not always completely in favor of the kingdom of darkness, but just enough to keep THE WORD OF THE LORD from manifesting in it's fullness,in his sphere of influence. Not your more obvious JUDAS!,I have brought situations like this before the LORD at times, even concerning some of the news, that would leave me saying things like " you can't tell who they're reporting for!"./who they're Promoting in favor of,even as they cast more grey.I don't always get as upset anymore, because it's better to recognize seeds of the enemy,if they're around, than to have your head in the sand. And I was disappointed, when I later listened to Chris today around 220pm on wmbi,as he cut off an old guy, when he sounded like he was going to make a comment concerning different things to take into account, could have even been a different way to minister to homosexuals that were raped as children, but we don't know because chris intercepted it,but on who's behalf did he cut off this view? (revelations chapter 3)

  4. Romans 1: 18-32 is a good litmus test for any progressive who also professes to be a Christian. Also Galatians 5: 13-25 is quite helpful in separating those who have eternal life and those who will not inherit the Kingdom of God. Again 1 Corinthians (though speaking to the Christians in regards to the nature of their walk with Christ) in chapter 6: 9-10 spells out specifically what awaits the unrighteous man or woman, they will not inherit the Kingdom of God. The warning is not to be deceived (once saved, always saved may get you into the foyer of God, but the rest of the luggage needs to stay outside if you want to venture any further). Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, effeminate, homosexuals, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, swindlers. What an interesting company! Quite a list of those who won't inherit. Yet James tells us to "Resist the Devil and he will flee, draw near to God and He will draw near to you", I personally like this promise. Salvation is not carte blanche! Jesus wants to bring all thing into subjection under His feet, the marriage supper of the Lamb! Every attack and distortion against the institution of marriage (in or out of the church) is an attack against the Kingdom of God and His Christ. From the beginning of creation "Man shall leave his father and mother and cling to his wife", and "The two shall become one flesh" The Father has an ancient foe, "Angel of Light", "Lucipher", "Deceiver of the Brethren" (now that's a title to warn anyone who thinks they are a Christian, better keep a check on that one). Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by fire and brimstone, and there was a Flood that covered the whole earth and killed all of the human race at that time except Noah, his wife, his some and their wives. Scriptures warn us of what the world will look like before His return. Just as in the days of Noah........Billy Graham warned the church in America about its spiritual health over that past two decades along with many others. If the shoe fits....take heed and reconsider. To the church remember the warning in Hebrews 10: 26-27 "For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH CONSUME THE ADVESARIES." and 1 Peter 4:18 "AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER?"

Many are praying for revival in America, but God will deal with the church first where He has some investment. 2 Chronicles 7:14 "If my people who are called by MY NAME, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways ways, I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and heal their land." (another great promise) I know some who live by that daily and experience the manifest presence of God in their lives, at great cost. They actively take up their cross daily to FOLLOW HIM. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was right in his time and God has preserved such men and woman who have not bowed the knee to Baal in our day, whom He is about to place on display. He who has ears to hear, LET HIM HEAR!.

  5. As a labor & birth nurse I believe the slippery slope with regard to understanding sexuality and marriage began in the 1960s. Although I am not Catholic I believe that Pope Paul VI provided wisdom in Humanae Vitae. I wrote about it on my blog. For some reason the Protestant and Evangelical churches had no response to the changing culture.

    1. Carol, I agree that Protestants unfortunately have not thought through sexuality very deeply and are suspicious of natural theology. But, we're discovering Humanae Vitae and beginning to embrace it. I think we have much to learn from Catholics in this area.

  6. You know I am awestruck at the complacency from the pulpit. Pastors are supposed to be the shepherds that lead the flocks just like Christ did, many should quit putting their party before their God! Romans 1:24 Homosexuality: Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshipped and served created things rather than the creator, who is forever praised. Homosexuality is unnatural relations, it is immoral and perverse. 1 Corinthians 6:9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God. (We had better start acting like it.) Galations 5:19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious; sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery, idolatry, and witchcraft, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, discensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies and the like. I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God. We should be living lives that the Lord would approve of, especially when he comes. Abortions are also destroying lives which God has created with a special purpose, I think people have no idea what kind of wrath is stored for those who repeat these sins, when the know it is immoral, and do not repent before the Coming of Christ. Can you imagine what the angels thought when they came to visit Lot in Sodom...Genesis 19:4 and all the men of the city surrounded Lot's house, calling to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them." No wonder God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Sin separates people from God, and the more it increased the tougher the times will become without God's blessings...Take it very seriously!

    1. Simply put--I call it THE ORGY IN THE STREETS GANGS
Unfortunately, the courts require you to be directly effected by the immorality
in order to have "standing" in the court, not a religious belief. A sane and stable society requires rules of conduct such as purposed by the philosophy of the man, the Jewish Rabbi,Jesus. Religious dogmaupsets the judges Your thoughts cafisenne@optonline.net

  7. First, I think conversation is always a good thing (generally speaking). And such "conversations" ought to include the political issues of the day if someone wants to discuss them. That said, there are many things that I may discuss in any given day that I would not discuss from the pulpit. Why? Because, as I see it, the pulpit isn't the place for every topic.

I disagree with the article on several points, but I'll limit my very brief thoughts to the most general. That being; Should pastors "get political" from the pulpit? I say: No. Here's why...Hopefully, most pastors would agree that the pulpit ought to be limited to biblical teaching. And, as I see it, that is the main (and perhaps fatal) flaw of this article.

In an article that makes a bold claim about what a pastor should preach, there isn't even a nod in the direction of scripture. To me, if its so plain that a pastor ought to "get political," then the chief of pastors, Jesus, would have demonstrated as much. Yet, in the politically charged atmosphere of 1st century Israel there isn't a hint at political activism in Jesus' travels. Further, how do we apply Bonhoeffer's indictment against the modern church to Christ's silence regarding the evil of Roman political oppression?

Its likely that those Jews seeking political deliverance in 1st century Israel charged Jesus in the same way that the author charges modern "spineless" pastors. "How can you see this evil and be silent!?" "Are you lukewarm…afraid…or both?!" Even if Jesus did model political activism (which He doesn't), I stillI wouldn't emphasize it from the pulpit. Why? Because I think priorities come into play as well. That is, we can't teach everything at once…we have to prioritize. And as has been said, "No one worries about a clogged toilet when the roof is on fire!" From my perspective, "the church" is missing the mark in more elementary ways than any perceived lack of political enthusiasm.

    Good discussion…

  8. Harvey Milk Stamped "Out" Forever !

The Obama Cabal is behind universal GAYety with a "forever" postage stamp glorifying Harvey Milk, a Jewish homosexual predator "attracted to boys aged 15-19," according to WikiAnswers! (Also see Wikipedia.)
Global gaydom was even predicted by Jesus (see "days of Lot" in Luke 17 and compare with Genesis 19).
And the Hebrew prophet Zechariah (14th chapter) says that during the same end-time gay "days" ALL nations will come against Israel and fulfill the "days of Noah" at the same time (see Luke 17 again) - a short time of anti-Jewish genocide found in Zechariah 13:8 when two-thirds of all Jews will die.
In other words, when "gay days" have become universal, all hell will break loose!
Shockingly, the same "days" will trigger the "end of days" - and when they begin, worldwide human government will quickly wind down in just a few short years! For the first time in history there won't be enough time for anyone to even attend college, let alone have a family, save money, enjoy retirement, etc.
One final thought. The more we see gays "coming out," the sooner Jesus will be "coming down"!
For more, Google or Yahoo "God to Same-Sexers: Hurry Up," "Jesus Never Mentioned Homosexuality. When gays have birthdays...," "FOR GAYS ONLY: Jesus Predicted..." and "USA - from Puritans to Impure-itans!"
